Emotional Regulation and DBT Skills

When your emotions feel bigger than you can manage

You might find that your emotions go from manageable to overwhelming very quickly. Anger, frustration, anxiety or sadness can feel intense, and once you're in that state it can be difficult to think clearly, communicate what you need or calm your body down. Afterwards, you might feel exhausted, guilty or wonder why you reacted so strongly.

For children and teenagers, this can look like big meltdowns, shutting down, becoming angry, withdrawing, struggling with transitions or finding everyday demands much harder than they appear from the outside. For neurodivergent children and young people, sensory overload, changes to plans, masking, social demands, executive functioning difficulties or feeling overwhelmed by noise, crowds and expectations can all contribute. There is often much more going on underneath the behaviour than simply “not coping”.

How can CBT help?

CBT can help you understand what happens before, during and after emotional overwhelm, including the thoughts, physical sensations, triggers and situations that can make things harder. We'll develop practical strategies for managing difficult emotions while also looking at what might need to change around you, rather than expecting you to simply tolerate more.

What could change?

The goal isn't to stop you having strong emotions. It's to feel more able to understand what's happening and have more choices in how you respond.

You might find it easier to recognise when you're becoming overwhelmed, communicate what you need, recover more quickly and feel less frightened or frustrated by your emotions.
